Airsoft Batteries: How They Work & What to Choose
If you're just getting started in airsoft then you will have probably asked yourself what airsoft battery should i get for my airsoft AEG? What connection type does my airsoft gun have? How do I charge my airsoft battery? Well in this blog we aim to help you choose what battery is best for you as well as understanding how they operate. We will also go over what airsoft batteries are, what mAh is and what the best voltage for your airsoft gun is.Deans or Tamiya?
In airsoft there are two different types of battery connections called deans & tamiya. Both are used widely across most airsoft guns, tamiya connector is slowly being fazed out, where as deans connections are becoming more popular for both battery and gun connections.
Tamiya is a small rectangle that has two smaller connectors inside it. Commonly, tamiya connectors are either black or a light green colour. Watch out as there are different tamiya adaptor types. Make sure you buy the correct one for your airsoft gun.
Deans connectors—also called T-plug connectors—are a type of prong connector shaped like a “T.” They are easy to recognize because they’re the only prong-style connector of their kind. Deans connectors function as an insert port on Deans-compatible batteries.
Voltage
Most airsoft setups use a standard voltage so your airsoft battery can power the gearbox consistently. In practice, there are usually 2 types of airsoft battery voltage choices, and it comes down to two options:
7.4V batteries
11.1V batteries
These voltages are common whether you’re running an AEG battery in an AEG or using them for compatible platforms. If you’re unsure, always match the battery voltage to your gun’s requirements (and your airsoft battery and charger compatibility). For select models like the Tokyo Marui NGRS line of guns it is required to run a 7.4v battery as anything higher could blow the fuse or break the internals due to over stress of the system.
Amperage / mAh
On an airsoft battery, the “capacity” is usually listed in mAh (milliamp-hours). In simple terms:
Higher mAh = longer runtime (more shots per charge)
Lower mAh = shorter runtime
Amperage can also be referenced as the discharge rate (C rating)—especially for airsoft lipo battery setups—because it impacts how well the battery can deliver power during bursts of trigger activity. Titan Power batteries are the best batteries with the highest mAh count that will last you a whole game day, we cannot recommend them enough.
Airsoft Battery Types
When people shop for airsoft batteries, you’ll mostly run into a few different battery types chemistry types like:
1) Airsoft LiPo
A typical match for many players is the airsoft lipo battery because it offers a good balance of size, weight, and power delivery.
Common example voltages:
7.4V LiPo
11.1V LiPo
If you want a specific voltage-focused example, you’ll often see listings like 11.1 v lipo airsoft battery.
2) Airsoft Ni-MH
These are still found, but Ni-MH is generally considered easier in some ways and sometimes cheaper—though many players prefer lipo airsoft battery performance.
Keyword fit: You’ll still see “airsoft battery” and “airsoft batteries” used broadly to describe both chemistry options.
Safety Tips
Working with lipo battery products requires extra care because LiPos are more sensitive to misuse than older chemistries.
General Safety Guidelines
Use the correct airsoft battery charger for your battery chemistry (LiPo vs Ni-MH).
Never charge a battery with the wrong airsoft battery and charger combination.
Do not puncture, crush, or overheat your lipo batteries.
Store batteries in a safe location and avoid leaving them in hot cars or direct sunlight.
If the battery swells or looks damaged, stop using it immediately—don’t “test it.”
Use batteries in a way that matches your gun’s power needs (especially if you’re running an AEG battery).
LiPo-Specific Reminders
Only charge airsoft lipo battery packs using a charger designed for LiPo batteries.
Avoid physical damage to lipo airsoft battery packs, as impacts can create dangerous failure risks.
Common Questions
Do Airsoft Batteries Come Charged?
Yes, airsoft batteries will come slightly charged. Usually around a quarter to half charged. This is to help prolong the shelf life of the batteries.
Do Airsoft Guns Come with Batteries?
Yes and no. Some guns will come with a battery if it is in a set, however most airsoft wont come with a battery out of the box and customers will have to supply their own power source.
Does Airsoft Battery Affect FPS?
No, your airsoft battery wont affect your FPS as all the battery does is supply power to your motor that completes a pre-set cycle within your gearbox. So your battery can't affect your power output, however your battery type will affect how fast your system runs for example your rate of fire will be slower on an 7.4v than an 11.1v battery
How Long Do Airsoft Batteries Last?
Airsoft batteries vary on how long they last, the more you shoot the quicker your battery will deplete. Usually a 1400 mAh battery will last about half a game day roughly about 2000 rounds give or take.
How Long Do Airsoft Batteries Take To Charge?
The time it takes to charge an airsoft battery can vary depending on its mAh count. The higher the mAh the longer it will take. A 1000 mAh Battery will usually take around 30 mins to fully charge from zero.
How To Charge a Airsoft Battery?
To charge your airsoft battery will have to get the correct airsoft charger for your battery i.e. a lipo charger for your lipo battery etc. Your airsoft battery will either plug directly into the tamiya or deans connection or more commonly you will plug the balance lead (the little white part) directing into the corresponding port on your charger.
How To Install Battery In Airsoft Gun?
Depending on which gun you have you should have a space either in the stock or the handguard of the gun. When installing the airsoft battery make sure as best as you can to not get any of the wires caught when inserting the battery as these could break the cables leaving you with a broken gun or a battery that wont work.
