What VRCA defences do Land Warrior Accept?

At Land Warrior, we help airsoft players understand and follow the recognised “defence” routes that can support eligibility for Realistic Imitation Firearm (RIF) purchase and sale under the Violent Crime Reduction Act framework. We’re here to make the process feel far less confusing—because when the rules are involved, clarity matters. If you’re under 18, it is illegal for you to buy an airsoft gun, and it is also illegal for anyone to sell one to you, whether you’re a skirmisher or not. For those who are 18 or over, the goal of each defence route is to show that you’re genuinely participating in (or connected to) the kind of activity that makes the purchase eligible, supported by evidence retailers can reasonably check.

Despite what you might get told UKARA & other defences are not an airsoft licence/ UK airsoft licence/ airsoft licence UK. These defences only act as a defence to prove that you are using your airsoft gun for its intended purpose. A lot of new players tend of ask the question "Do you need a licence for airsoft guns?"  or "How to get a UKARA licence?" sort answer for these questions is you don't need them, you can buy non realistic two tone airsoft guns in the UK. However if you would like to own a RIF that looks realistic then you will need a valid defence like a UKARA. A UKARA can be obtained at your local airsoft field by playing 3 games in the space of 2 months at the same field. Other Defences such as Just Cos or UKAPU you will just sign up as a member and pay an annual membership fee and these defences can be used to purchase realistic imitation firearms.  

It’s also worth noting that a Firearm or Air Weapon Certificate does not count as one of the accepted defence routes we use for RIF eligibility. If you don’t have a valid defence route, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck—there are alternative options available. In fact, we offer a free two-tone service for people who don’t have a valid defence, helping you access a compliant route by changing the item from a RIF to an IF (Imitation Firearm), where purchase is available to those over 18 (subject to the applicable rules for IF items).

Defence routes we accept (with links)

Historical re-enactment is accepted where the RIF purchase is connected to legitimate re-enactment activity—for example, museum displays or TV/film/theatre production. The key point is that the purchase needs to be evidenced as relevant to that purpose. Proof may include photographs and/or a member number showing involvement with the relevant group or museum.

UKARA (United Kingdom Airsoft Retailers Association)

UKARA (United Kingdom Airsoft Retailers Association) is one of the best-known defence routes and is designed to facilitate remote selling by confirming player eligibility. It works around the idea that qualifying site attendance can be validated, so retailers can quickly check whether a purchaser is entitled to buy a RIF.

UKASA (United Kingdom Airsoft Site Associations)

UKASA (United Kingdom Airsoft Site Associations) is a recognised site-association route. The aim is to demonstrate legitimacy/participation in airsoft through affiliation with an accepted site association structure.

UKAPU (United Kingdom Airsoft Players Union) is a players’ union route. Membership/affiliation is intended to show you’re an organiser/participant connected with an established players’ body.

BAC (British Airsoft Club)

BAC (British Airsoft Club) provides another membership club route intended to support a safe method of selling and purchasing RIFs. BAC describes an electronic registration approach where players provide details of qualifying attendance for verification and activation.

S.W.A.T. PASS

The S.W.A.T. PASS system is a verification/access system connected to airsoft participation. It’s presented as a model where S.W.A.T approves players, and retailers can check that player verification status quickly and consistently.

Just Cos

Just Cos is listed as an additional defence route that’s typically associated with documented cosplay/costume activity. Since some cosplay contexts involve replica firearms, it can sometimes extend into the type of evidence retailers expect when considering eligibility.

MVT (Military Vehicle Trust) is a trust involved with military vehicle related activities. This is treated as a defence route where evidence of involvement can help link the purchase to an appropriate activity connected to military heritage.

BASC (British Association for Shooting and Conservation) is included as a recognised sports/outdoor organisation pathway. The idea is that structured membership/participation can support eligibility.
